Commissions and split payments with Stripe Connect

The heart of any marketplace is the moment a buyer pays once and the money splits correctly — the vendor’s share to them, your commission to you, Stripe fees deducted transparently. 4marketplace does this automatically, through Stripe Connect, on every order. This page explains exactly how the split works, how you configure the commission, and what happens at payouts and refunds.

How a payment splits: split payments in practice

When a buyer places a 100 € order, the payment enters the Stripe system once. 4marketplace calculates your commission — say 10%, i.e. 10 € — and instructs Stripe to automatically transfer 90 € to the vendor’s account, keeping 10 € for the platform. The buyer sees a single card transaction; the vendor sees the net payout; you see the commission. Nothing is calculated by hand and no money passes through your personal account.

Technically this mechanism is a “destination charge with an application fee”: the charge happens in the platform context, and the vendor’s share is routed to their connected account. Stripe’s fees (the per-transaction percentage) are usually deducted from the platform’s side, but can be configured, so you know exactly who bears the processing cost.

  • A single buyer payment → automatic split
  • The vendor’s share goes straight to their connected account
  • Your commission (application fee) is deducted transparently

Setting the commission: global, per category, per vendor

Commission does not have to be a single number for everything. On 4marketplace you set a global commission (say 10%) and then override it where it makes sense: a higher rate on high-margin categories (handmade, services — 15–20%), a lower one on competitive categories (electronics — 5–8%), or special terms for vendors who bring large volume. This way your commission structure reflects the economic reality of each niche.

You can combine commission with other models: a monthly subscription for vendors (which lowers their per-transaction commission) or a flat listing fee. The key is that it stays transparent to the vendor — each one sees in their dashboard how much they sold, how much the platform kept and how much they receive net. Lack of commission transparency is the number-one reason vendors leave a marketplace.

Payouts, refunds and disputes

The payout is when the money in the vendor’s Stripe account reaches their bank account. The payout schedule (daily, weekly or manual) is configurable — many marketplaces hold the payout for a few days to cover potential returns, especially for new vendors. On 4marketplace you can have different policies: fast payout for trusted vendors, a hold period for new ones.

On a refund, the money returns proportionally: the vendor’s share is reclaimed from their account, and your commission can be returned or kept, depending on policy. Card disputes (chargebacks) are handled through Stripe, with clear rules about who bears the cost. The operational key is that these cases are automated and visible, not resolved by hand over e-mail — exactly what the integrated 4marketplace flow provides.

  • Configurable payout schedule (daily / weekly / manual)
  • Hold period for new vendors, as a return buffer
  • Proportional refund + clear commission rules on return

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Automatic split — you neither calculate nor transfer anything by hand on each order.
  • Vendors’ money never passes through your account, so you avoid payment-institution obligations.
  • Flexible commission: global, per category, per vendor, changeable any time.
  • Full transparency for the vendor: they see gross, commission and net in their dashboard.
  • Payouts and refunds handled through Stripe, with clear cost rules.

Limitations

  • You depend on Stripe Connect availability in your vendors’ countries.
  • Stripe fees stack on top of your commission — they must be factored in.
  • Chargebacks require a clear policy, otherwise the cost can land on the wrong party.

Quick verdict

For a marketplace, split payments through Stripe Connect is the de facto standard: it gives the buyer a single charge, automatic money separation and a clean exit from the legal complications of holding other people’s funds. 4marketplace ships it pre-integrated, with configurable commission and schedulable payouts — exactly the money infrastructure a marketplace needs from day one.

Frequently asked questions

Does the buyer pay each vendor separately?

No. The buyer makes a single payment, even if the cart contains products from several vendors. 4marketplace, through Stripe Connect, automatically splits the amount to each vendor and keeps your commission. For the buyer it feels like an ordinary store, with one checkout.

Who pays the Stripe fees?

By default, Stripe’s processing fees are deducted from the platform’s side, but the setup is flexible. The key is to factor them in: if you take a 10% commission and Stripe keeps ~1.5%+, your real margin is smaller. Many marketplaces size their commission precisely to cover the processing fee plus profit.

Can I have different commissions per category?

Yes. On 4marketplace the commission is global as a starting point, but you can override it per category and per vendor. That way you set a higher rate on high-margin categories and a lower one on competitive ones, without touching the overall structure.

What happens to the commission on a refund?

On a refund, the vendor’s share is reclaimed from their account, and your commission can be returned in full, partially, or kept, depending on the policy you set. The common recommendation is to return the commission when the vendor is at fault and keep it when the return is the buyer’s choice — but you decide the rule.

Do I need a payment-institution licence?

Generally no, precisely because you use Stripe Connect: buyers’ money does not pass through your account but is routed directly by Stripe to the vendors. Stripe is the regulated party. That said, the tax and reporting obligations of your own marketplace activity still apply — consult an accountant for your specific situation.
